Abolitionist Teacher
I am a teacher dedicated to the philosophies of anti-racism, abolitionist teaching, and cultivating genius.
I began my teaching journey in Belgrade, Serbia where I taught English to kids and adults for almost two years. Upon returning to the United States, I immediately entered a Masters in Teaching program where I earned a Masters in Secondary Education with credentials in Middle School English, Social Studies, and English Language Development. I have taught in Springfield, Oregon, San José, California, and now East Palo Alto, California.
Besides my passions for economic and social justice, I am a proud queer nerd who loves the universes of Harry Potter, Marvel, Star Wars, Doctor Who, Wonder Woman, Stranger Things, Rick and Morty, and so much more. When it comes to sports, I am all about my beloved Liverpool Football Club. I’ve been obsessed with our ethos of You’ll Never Walk Alone since I was in high school.
I grew up in Anaheim, California speaking English and Spanish. My daddy was a boxer when he was young. He stopped going to school after the 3rd grade. He was proudly Mexican. My mom lives with me and my family in Belle Haven. She graduated high school, but was not allowed to go to college because she was a girl and was expected to care for her younger brothers. My mom is proudly Mexican American. I proudly identify as: Chicana, Latin@, Latinx, Xicana, queer, Latina, Mexican American, and so much more. Hablo espańol con orgullo.
Abolitionist Teaching and the Future of Our Schools
My educational heroes Dr. Bettina Love, Dr. Gholdy Muhammad, and Dena Simmons engage in a conversation about abolitionist teaching and Covid-era education.
